Tiffin University Football Mentorship Summary:
Now that I am finished with my mentorship with Tiffin University Football I feel that I have gotten a lot out of this mentorship. I have learned how to upload and edit film as well as coach a position that I have not played in about 8 years. I was able to learn the ins and outs of a Division II program after playing in a Division III during my undergrad years. Sure there were aspects of the job I did not like, for example the getting up at 5am to get to Tiffin by 6am for early morning workouts. These were not as fun but that is part of the job. I got to experience what is like to recruit certain athletes and how to work a little bit as the Director of Football Operations. I thoroughly enjoyed working this position and I would highly recommend this position to anyone that is looking to get into the same profession and is in need of a mentorship. These are connections that I will always have now and I am grateful for Coach Horn, Coach Goff and the rest of the Tiffin University Football Coaching Staff for taking me in and teaching me some of the basics of coaching at the college level.

Day 47: 4/16/18 Final Equipment Hand In
Today is my last day at Tiffin University Football. All we have to do today is hand in equipment and the players will be done with football related activities until they check into camp in August. We had almost everyone come in to turn in equipment, there were some that were stuck with class conflicts or other problems so they were excused from turning in equipment today. After the day was over I asked if the coaches need me tomorrow to finish up who was left and they said they did not so that means my time at Tiffin University Football is now complete. It is bittersweet to finish here because it just seems like yesterday I was checking in for my first day but that is what happens when you actually enjoy your mentorship.

Day 46: 4/13/18 Spring Game Time!
Today is the day we have been working towards since the start of spring practices. We handed out uniforms to the teams about 3 hours before the game, this gave the players about 3 hours to get the gear ready, take their pictures for social media, and get mentally ready to play. Once I got to the stadium I hooked up the coaching headsets and got the scoreboard ready to go. The first and third quarters of the game were a running clock so the time went relatively quick, but the second and fourth quarters were a normal clock so I actually had to pay attention to the officials and stop it when the wanted me to stop it. It was a little stressful at times but I was able to power through and get the job done. Gold team beat the Green team by a score of 28-14. It was a competitive game and it was a lot of fun to watch. Once the game was over I went and uploaded film and got that to the team. I asked the coaches if they need me to help with equipment turn in and they said yes so I looks like Monday will be my final day!

Day 45: 4/12/18 Spring Game Hype is On!
Today we had some short meetings just to go over the film from practice Wednesday and then we had a small walk through with the spring game teams. We also had a "Final Four" for the winter teams that the players had over the last semester. The four teams faced off in a dodgeball tournament then the final two teams had a tug of war to figure out an overall champion. It was a nice change of pace to get the guys excited about competition and the fact that they are have a full go "game" tomorrow. This is my first Tiffin University Spring Game and it should be a lot of fun. They have me running the clock since I have done that in the past but that does not bother me. I was hoping to do some coaching on the sideline but I will help get the players excited top play before I go up to do my job.

Day 44: 4/11/18 Last Full Go Practice
Today is the last full pad practice before the spring game that did get moved up to Friday night at 6:30 because there is supposed to be some nasty weather coming in this coming Saturday. The practice did get moved up to 4:45 which also means that no practice this spring went at the original intended time of 8pm. On Thursday we are having an hour walk through with everyone splitting into their spring game teams. After practice I did my usual uploading and helped Coach Horn grade a couple of the team sessions that way there is less to do and less rush tomorrow before meetings.

Day 43: 4/7/18 Team Scrimmage #2
Today was a team scrimmage, generally the same as last week and we have a full officiating crew this week. This will help keep some order and also help me with the clock because of the fact that I am running it again. Once this practice was over I was to upload the film and then get the classroom setup for the officials because they would be using the film as a grade for these officials as they are people that are looking to get into the profession of college officiating. I stuck around until the end of that in order to clean up then went home.

Day 42: 4/6/18 Hard Hitting Practice
Today was a normal practice day with an adjusted time of course. We have yet to have a practice at the pre set time of 8:00pm but you won't hear me complaining about it. A lot of these drills were live periods meaning the players could go all out and tackle each other. The players seem to really like this because of the fact that they have some bottled up energy or frustration and they can burn it off in these periods. Tomorrow is another scrimmage day and this time we will have a full officiating crew. This will give us a game feel before we go out and play our spring game next week.

Day 41: 4/4/18 Down to a handful of practices
Nothing too special today in the offices of Tiffin University Football. We had an early practice time because of the fact the players had an all campus seminar they had to attend. Instead of late at night practice we had practice at 11:30am, come to find out Tiffin does not have classes during the day on Wednesdays only night classes. This meant for a early get out day once everything was uploaded after practice. Coach Horn and I were going to grade film after practice but a surprise meeting put a stop to that and we decided we would come in Thursday before meetings and knock that out real quick. We are doing to 4 practices and a Spring Game remaining, which means that we are almost done with Spring Practices. This also means that my time with Tiffin University Football is rapidly coming to an end.

Day 40: 4/2/18 Monday Change Up
Typically I do not have to come in on a Monday but due to the fact that there was not practice Sunday because of the holiday we have practice Monday afternoon. Prior to that we had 7am meetings to get everyone awake and moving after the last two days. These meetings were just out typical meetings and we were able to finish this after only an hour. Practice started at 3 and we were done at about 5, which is about 30 minutes shorter than what it was at the beginning of spring. Coach Goff is starting to cut back on the practice time just a little because there is not real reason to have a 2 and a half hour practices this deep into spring. After practice I uploaded film and went home.

Day 39: 3/30/18 Team Scrimmage Day!
Today is the last day before we have a couple days off for the Easter holiday. For practice we had a team scrimmage, four different sections of the scrimmage and all of it was full go with tackling and everything. This is an interesting practice because normally it feels like we are just going through the motions but today since we were able to get a little contact it seemed like the players were more excited for this practice than any practice we have had up to this point. We saw some great plays on both sides of the ball and the energy never went away even though it was cold outside. After practice I did my typical uploading of film and went home to enjoy the next two days off! Happy Easter!

Day 38: 3/28/18 Halfway Point
We have reached the halfway point of spring practices, we have installed all of the offense that has been needed now it is just added a few wrinkles here and there. Practice was originally planned for 8pm but due to one of the spring sport teams not using the indoor facility after 4pm we were able to get started at 4:45 and be done at 7pm. After that I uploaded film and help input plays that were called. Tomorrow we will probably grade this practice and share these grades with the receivers at 3pm meetings tomorrow.

Day 37: 3/26/18 Grading Day
Today was a more relaxed day in the office, normally I don't have to come in on a Monday but Coach Horn asked me to come in and help him grade the last couple practices just so we are caught up and we can share these grades with the players. I am starting to learn a little more about this offense while grading these practices. We watch as certain play a couple times before making final grades and this is helping me figure out each route and read that a receiver might see on field. Sure we still have a long way to go for some of these players but we can now see which players are improving and which still need work.

Day 36: 3/23/18 No Practice but still normal day
Today there was no practice but there was still meetings that had to be done. Prior to this meeting I was to help Coach Horn grade the practice on Wednesday, overall the receivers had a good practice but there is still work that needs to be done. There are some players that are starting to stand out above the rest and there are some that still need some tuning. This is expected for this time of year when you are trying to figure out who will be the guys that will play when the new season starts in August. I do not have to help this weekend which is nice but I will have to help with the spring game coming up which is Saturday April 14th. Guess that is the trade off.

Day 35: 3/21/18 Long Weekend but right back to it
The team did not need me over the weekend because they had the amount of hands needed to get the job done and there was also no practice on Monday so I was not needed until Wednesday. I worked with Coach Horn grading the film from the previous practices, it was good experience for me in seeing how he grades receivers and how he goes about doing something like this. After the position meeting I went to the indoor facility and started to set up practice, everything went smooth there and it was time for another spring practice. This one went smooth just like the other and once this was over I was to upload film and then get the player laundry started. It was a longer day to say the least but it was definitely some good experience for me.

Day 34: 3/16/18 First Spring Practice
Today is the first day of spring practice! It is an exciting and anxious day here in the office. All of the coaches are ready to go and they are also nervous because they are not sure how the players are going to come out for the first practice since November. I helped out with the morning meetings, I talked to Coach Horn about what drills we were going to run and he decided to give me some individual drills! This will be the first time I have done drills on my own! Once I am done with those I am to help film practice and upload once it is over. Happy Spring Practice!

Day 33: 3/14/18 Equipment Handout!
Today was a more relaxing day because of the fact that spring practice starts in a couple days. After getting some homework done I was to help Coach Horn film all of the new signals and upload them to HUDL, this way the players can see and get familiar with the signals before we step on the field and a couple days. Once these were done I was to head to the locker room at the practice facility and help hand out equipment to the upper classmen. The younger players will get their equipment tomorrow and we will start practice on Friday. The schedule is about to get more hectic but it will keep us busy and make the days go by.

Day 32: 3/12/18 Welcome Back!
Today was the first day back from Spring Break and you could tell that everyone needed a break! It was a slight struggle to get back into the flow of things but once that flow hit, it was a normal day here at the football offices at Tiffin University. As I was wrapping up the day I was asked if I could help out with Spring practices, I will mostly be working with film and some receiver drills as they show up. I am more than willing because it is more hours towards this mentorship and it is also great experience going through something like this.

Day 31: 3/1/18 Spring Break!
Today was a very short day due to the fact that it was the start of spring break for the players. When I showed up at my normal time the coaching staff told me to take off at lunch so I spent the 4 hours working on more film. I decided that instead of taking my spring break in a warm place, I would spend it working on this film and trying to get it done while we are gone for the week. Spring practices are right around the corner and this break will be needed.

Day 30: 2/28/18 Working Hard or Hardly Working
I was asked to come in at 6am for early workouts with the receivers. For these workouts all we did was throw the ball around because the players have not gotten the chance to actually touch a football since the season ended. Getting the players back into the flow of things ahead of spring practice will be very important. After this I worked on some homework before getting two more games done for the film. This leaves me with 9 games of this film left!

Day 29: 2/26/18 Another day in the office
Today was generally the same as a normal day. I mostly worked on getting some of this film done because I was not able to get more than just one game done over the weekend due to prior engagements. I was able to get a couple games done and this is starting to put a dent into the Alabama film. I am hoping to be done with this by the end of the week! That way I am on to Georgia by the time Spring Break rolls around.

Day 28: 2/23/18 Meeting Day
Today we had a position meeting just to go over some plays and some new signals that the offense has come up with in order to move quicker and be more productive. They had some pretty decent stats from last season but they can always improve. This day mostly consisted of this meeting and doing film. I have decided that I will take this computer home with me and try to get some games done. I was able to get five games done last week when I did this, do not think I will be able to do this again because I have plans going on this weekend, but I will try.

Day 27: 2/21/18 Light Day at the Office
Due to the team building activity that took place Tuesday night there was no Receiver work going on this morning. I was able to get a good amount of my homework done while uploading the rest of the Georgia film. I was able to get 2 Alabama games done, this leaves me with 3 games left for offense. The new Defensive Coordinator has been hired and moved into his place today, have not gotten the chance to introduce myself because I have been busy with these games. I might end up taking the computer I work on home again this weekend and get more games done. Still up for debate.

Day 26: 2/19/18 Productive Day!
Today I decided that I would lock down and get as many games done as I can. I was able to finish all of the Oklahoma film over the weekend and get started on the Alabama offense. I was able to finish 3 games over the weekend and today I polished off 5 games. This leaves me with just 6 games for the offense left with all the defense still to go but it is a good start. This should make the rest of the week a little easier, except when I have to get some homework done.

Day 25: 2/16/18 Homework Day (With a little film)
Today was more of a homework day because there was not a lot to do around the office. Once I was able to finish that homework I continued on with the Oklahoma Film but I was not able to finish it, by the time I was able to get rolling it was time for a position meeting in which I help out with. Once this was over it was 5:30pm and decided to head home. I packed up the laptop and decided I would work on some of this film over the weekend in order to get really ahead. This might be a good idea in the long run.

Day 24: 2/14/18 Valentines Day Run
I was told to come in at 6am this day because the team was going to go for a little run around the practice fields. This run was just about 1.25 miles and once this was over we just went back to the office and it was back to normal. I was able to get a lot of games done after I did a little bit of homework. As I left today I only had 2 Oklahoma games remaining, which is good but I still have a whole season of Alabama film and Georgia film. I am debating on working on some of this during the weekend just to make sure I can get these done and at least put a dent into the other film.

Day 23: 2/12/18 Another Day in the Books
Today was a generally slow day. I was able to crank out a couple games for the Oklahoma film while uploading Alabama film. After I get that Alabama film uploaded I will start to get some film from Georgia done. This is some big time film and I am glad that I am getting a chance to learn some new things from these coaches and from this film. This will help as I look to possibly get into coaching down the line. Sure this film is time consuming work but it will help down the line when I am looking for a job. It is a skill that not a lot of people have.

Day 22: 2/9/18 Back to Film
There as no extra work with the players today after the early morning and meeting that we had the last work day. Today was mostly based on homework and film. I was able to get a couple games done and also download a couple games for our Alabama Film and Clemson Film. Yes more film has been brought to me, this will probably an on going thing until spring practices start on the 16th of March. I do not mind the work, just want to work on something else every now and then.

I do not mind the work, just want to work on something else every now and then.
Day 21: 2/7/18 Time to work with the players
Today was really interesting. I was told the last work day that I was to show up at 6:30am in order to do agility work with the wide receivers. This is the first time that I would be working with the position group and it was really excited, except for the waking up early part. After working with the receivers it was back to normal when it came to work. After getting some homework done I worked on the rest of that Oklahoma film for defense. Now I am starting to work on offense and once that is done I will start to work on the other film that needs to be done.

Day 20: 2/5/18 Oklahoma, Oklahoma, Oklahoma
Just like the title says this day was all about Oklahoma film. I was actually able to get a lot of that film done today while working. I was able to get around 5 games uploaded while breaking down about 3 or 4 of them. Keep it in mind that I am only doing one side of the ball right now but I am still getting these games out quick. I found it interesting that I went from one really good QB in Quinton Flowers from USF to the Heisman Trophy Winner in Baker Mayfield. The talent that is in these games is incredible and a lot of these guys that I am seeing on this film will be playing at the next level and the National Football League. The combine is next month and I am curious to see how many from Oklahoma will be there.

Day 19: 2/3/18 Final Recruiting Day!
Today was the final recruiting day of the offseason. National signing day is on Wednesday the 7th and this is the last day we can talk with the recruits until the 7th. As a normal recruiting day, showed up around 7am to set up the Heminger then headed to the Marion to set up the greeting room and finally went to the stadium to play that highlight film. We only had one group so this day was a shorter one, which was nice because after a month of recruiting days you are ready to be done with them. After cleaning up the Heminger I went home and recruiting days were officially done.

Day 18: 2/1/18 On to the next project.
After getting some homework done I started to crank out the Oklahoma film that was handed to me my last work day (1/31). I was able to get almost all of this film uploaded to our system and started to break it down. Luckily Coach Allgood is willing to do some of the breakdown as well so it is not all me that will be breaking this film done. I am starting with the defensive side of the ball and then going to offense. I figured right now Coach Allgood needs this film more than the other coaches do right now so I am sending them to him while I do the defense. Coach Edwards is a film dude and absolutely loves to watch other teams film so he is all over this film that I have been sending to him. I was able to get 7 games uploaded and I have 4 defensive games done. Which is a lot faster than what I did with the last film. I think I am starting to get the hang of this!

Day 17: 1/31/18 Another Project Coming This Way!
As I got in the office I started to work on highlight films for the recruits that have committed to the program. These films are only one minute a person and they are the highlights that these recruits made back on their HUDL pages. As I was finishing up homework the offensive line coach, Ryan Allgood, came to me with a project. There is some Oklahoma film that is currently downloading on the computer next to me and this will be my next project! I will be doing something similar to what I did before now just with Oklahoma film. There are about anywhere from 12-15 games to do.

Day 16: 1/29/18 The Project is Done!
Today was the day I was able to finish all of the film that was given to me earlier in the month. All of the South Florida and Wisconsin film is officially done and now I can focus other things within the program. I would be willing to do more projects on something like this if they are needed and knowing the capability of our coaching staff at getting film, I bet this is not the last time I will be doing a project like this.

Day 15: 1/27/18 Recruiting Day #3
Another Saturday in January means another recruiting day. Same thing just a different day when it comes to my responsibilities. Arrive at the Heminger and setup the classroom, go to the Marion and set up the greeting room, go to the stadium and play a highlight film, head back to the Heminger to tear down the classroom and head home. However, today I decided to stick around and get a lot of games done I was able to finish the rest of the South Florida film and do 3 games of the Wisconsin film. That was about 6 to 7 games. I should be able to finish this project Monday!

Day 14: 1/26/18 Put some serious dents into this
I did not have to worry about homework today so my day was spent working on this project! I was able to crank out 3 games today which put a good dent into the project that put me at over halfway for the South Florida film and almost halfway through the whole project! This leaves me with just about 4 games left of the South Florida film and that will leave me with just the 7 Wisconsin games to do and that will be it for that project!

Day 13: 1/24/18 Keep on Keeping On
Today was generally the same as Monday. After getting some homework done I started to crank out another 2 games for the University of South Florida film. This program had about 11 games that we could obtain and so far I have 4 game complete. That is about 36% of the games for South Florida unfortunately that is only about 22% of the games I have to do total. This is not too bad though because of the fact that it is keeping me busy and prevents me from just sitting there not doing anything.

Day 12: 1/22/18 More of the Same
Today after getting some homework done I started to knock out more of that project. I was able to get 2 games done for both offense and defense and this will give the coaches a start on what these teams do and what they can use for their position groups. This project is almost tiring because I am just staring at a computer screen for a couple hours each day. I do get time to go get lunch when it is time but once I get back I am right back to it. Once I get that film uploaded and I get the film split between offense and defense I am to breakdown the film with down, distance, run/pass, gain/loss and so forth. I do this by looking at the play by play on ESPN.com

Day 11: 1/20/18 Recruiting Day #2
The project will have to wait until Monday because we have another recruiting day on this Saturday. Today was just a typical recruiting day for me. I did the same thing I did the last couple days but I changed it up and decided to go to lunch with the recruits and talk to some of them instead of just burying myself back in the office and waiting until they are done. It was a good experience to talk to some of these recruits and see where they stand on their decision of what school to attend and what team to play for.

Day 10: 1/19/18 Time to put a dent into this project
This day was committed to getting these games uploading to our main film editing system HUDL and breaking them down between the wide and tight shots. The process of this is not too hard but it is very time consuming, they did not give me any sort of timetable to get this done but that does not mean that I should take it easy and not do any of this. This project needs to get done.

Day 9: 1/17/18 Big Time Project Comes Up
The first day in the last couple days without a recruiting day. I was working on homework when Coach Edwards, the defensive coordinator, comes in a tells me about a big time project he wants me to do. This project includes uploading film from the University of South Florida and Wisconsin. We received this film from a member of each staff that has worked with Coach Edwards in the past. This project is going to take me a couple weeks because I will only be able to do about two to three games a day and we have about 17 to 18 games to do. This shall be fun!

Day 8: 1/15/18 Recruiting Day #1 part 2
Today is MLK Day and we are doing another recruiting day, this day if for the recruits that did not come to come to the recruiting day Saturday due to the weather. I did the exact same thing that I did Saturday, set up the classroom, set up the greeting room, went to the stadium and played that video, went back to the Heminger and tore down the classroom and went home. These day are pretty relaxed from my perspective and generally once of the shortest days I will have to deal with.

Day 7: 1/13/18 Recruiting Day #1
Today was our first Recruiting Day here on campus and it is time to show off all of our work we did the day before. When I arrived this morning I first set up the classroom in the Heminger Center and got that highlight film set up and then went straight to the Marion Center to get the greeting room ready for the recruits that show up. After this I was to go to the stadium and that was where I set up shop there for the next couple hours. When the recruits would show up I would play the mid season highlight and show off the scoreboard and the sound system. Once that was over I went back to the Heminger and tore down the classroom once the recruits left the building. Due to the weather we had today some recruits did not show up but since Monday is MLK Day we are going to do this all over again Monday.

Day 6: 1/12/18 Stress, Stress and More Stress
It is the day before our first recruiting visit day at Tiffin University. This day is very important because we have to make sure that we have everything up and running and ready for one of the bigger days for the program. Head Coach Gary Goff will not be there as he is recovering from emergency surgery but he should be able to return to work shortly. The reason this day was so stress was because I was to head to Frost-Kalnow Stadium and set up that highlight film as well as turn the scoreboard on and do a couple test runs. Once that was over I was to head to the Paradiso Athletic Complex and set up the film that is going to be played there. At first I could not get the highlight at the stadium to work but after doing some playing around with the computer settings I was able to finally get it to work. Once I got back to office and about to leave I was told to edit the season highlight film and knock it down to about 3 to 4 minutes. Had to take a deep breath once the day was finally done.

Day 5: 1/10/18 Protein Station
When I arrived into the office I knew I had to finish up those highlight films and give them some sort of test run. Well those plans changed very quickly when I walked into the office. When I arrived there were peanuts, M&M's, and other goodies in the staff room. Two of the Graduate Assistants and myself were to mix together all of the these items and put a couple more things into the refrigerator for the players. The coaches were setting up a protein station for the players when they get out of workouts during this offseason. This task took over 4 to 5 hours because we had over 10 containers of peanuts and about 5 containers of M&M's that needed to be mixed together and put into sandwich bags. After this was done I continued to work on the highlight films. Once I was finally done I decided I would test them Friday and show the coaches then. This turned out to be my longest day yet. All part of the job I guess!

Day 4: 1/8/18 Things start to pick up
The start of my first full week really got off to a good start. Some of the players were starting to come back to campus even though classes did not start until the 16th. During this day I was to work on some highlight films for our upcoming recruiting visit that we have setup for the next couple Saturdays. I was to make a highlight film of the season, mid season and of "The Program", a military leadership training program the team uses during the offseason. This was the main focus of my day.

Day 3: 1/5/18 Slow go at it in the office.
Coach Horn and myself decided that I would work today since my schedule was to work three days a week and we started on a Wednesday. This day was similar to Thursday. The work load around the office was not that much at the time due to the fact that the players were not back on campus yet. There was not a lot to do in the office during this day and it became a shorter day for me.

Day 2: 1/4/18 Busier Day
On my second day with Tiffin University Football things started to pick up just a little bit. I was still working around the office but I was starting to get more involved in the everyday aspects of the job. I was able to sit in meetings and organize player files before the players returned from break. During this time I was to work on our recruiting site called FrontRush and update it will new commits and new recruits as they came in. The hours stayed the same but a lot more work was done.

Day 1: 1/3/18 Getting Started.
Today was my first day with Tiffin University with the Director of Football Operations Joe Horn. This day mostly consisted of setting everything up and dealing with how many hours I would be doing with Coach Horn. We went over my goal sheet and what he expects. It should be a fun time working with him. I went back to the office that I will be working in and started to work on certain items that needed to get done. One of these included sending film to an NFL Scout that is looking at one of our players, just not sure who it is. I feel like I am going to enjoy this internship.
